Attorney General Gentner Drummond formally requested that the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board deny clemency for convicted murderer George John Hanson. His clemency hearing is May 7.

“It is my firm hope that any plea for clemency is denied for the man who brutally murdered 77-year-old Mary Bowles more than 25 years ago,” said Drummond. “This murderer’s execution has been delayed for far too long. I am committed to ensuring that the Bowles family finally sees that justice is done for their loved one.”

Hanson and an accomplice carjacked and kidnapped Bowles from a Tulsa mall in 1999. She was shot to death at an isolated dirt pit near Owasso. Just minutes before killing Bowles, Hanson and his accomplice also gunned down an innocent bystander, Jerald Thurman.

Hanson, also known as John Fitzgerald Hanson, was transferred last month from a Louisiana federal prison at Drummond's request. The transfer was facilitated by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Bureau of Prisons after previously being blocked by the Biden Administration.

Hanson’s execution date is set for June 12.
