A Guatemalan national, Mario Lopez, 35, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly reentering the United States illegally following his deportation. Lopez faces a charge of unlawful reentry of a deported alien, after being arrested and charged by criminal complaint in March 2025. He is currently detained awaiting trial.
According to the official documents, Lopez was deported from the United States on December 8, 2010, following an assault conviction in Maryland. The indictment alleges that he attempted to enter the U.S. twice in 2022 but was denied both attempts. Despite these failed attempts, Lopez is accused of reentering the country unlawfully at a later time. His presence in the United States was discovered by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after arrests in November 2023, March 2024, and December 2024.
The charge Lopez faces could result in a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, with three additional years of supervised release and a possible fine of $250,000. Upon completion of any sentence, Lopez would be subject to deportation. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge, based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director, Boston, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Reynolds of the Criminal Division.
The details mentioned are allegations at this stage, and Lopez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
