A Delaware man pleaded guilty to his involvement in the 2024 death of Kevin Harris. Bernard Stewart, 73, from Wilmington, admitted to charges of manslaughter and possession of a destructive weapon on March 14, following a Wilmington Police Department investigation.
Attorney General Kathy Jennings stated, "This senseless tragedy was the result of guns being used as a permanent solution to a temporary dispute." She expressed condolences to the victim's family, calling the event a "terrible and preventable loss."
Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos hoped Stewart's guilty plea would bring some comfort to the victim's family. "I applaud our patrol officers and investigators for their prompt actions to make an arrest in this case, and thank the Department of Justice for their efforts to hold this offender accountable for his actions," Campos said.
The incident occurred on July 4, 2024, when 49-year-old Kevin Harris was sitting on Stewart's porch at North Lombard Street and East 10th Street in Wilmington. An argument escalated, leading Stewart, who felt threatened due to a previous altercation, to shoot Harris in the head with a shotgun. Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.
