California Attorney General Rob Bonta has joined a bipartisan coalition of 40 attorneys general urging Congress to provide full funding for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). The LSC is federally funded and plays a significant role in complementing state and other funding sources to offer civil legal aid to low-income Americans.
Attorney General Bonta highlighted the importance of equal access to the justice system, emphasizing that low-income families often encounter financial challenges when seeking legal assistance. He stated, “The Legal Services Corporation helps ensure that our legal system works for all Americans, not just those who can afford representation. From helping domestic violence survivors find safety to protecting seniors from scams, this important work cannot go unfunded. I urge Congress to support our most vulnerable constituents and prioritize investment in the Legal Services Corporation.”
Since its inception by Congress 50 years ago, the LSC has been instrumental in providing civil legal services to low-income individuals who would otherwise not have access. The extent of federal funding directly influences the number of Americans the LSC can assist. The organization distributes grants to local nonprofits, which deliver legal services from around 900 offices nationwide across urban and rural locations. LSC-funded programs support veterans, disaster victims, domestic violence survivors, and seniors facing financial exploitation.
The coalition includes attorneys general from several states and territories, such as Colorado, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and more. A copy of the letters submitted can be accessed publicly.
