A Venezuelan national admitted to resisting arrest by federal officers in Providence. Edward Antonio Reyes Calderon, 22, confessed in federal court to resisting when Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deportation Officers attempted to detain him outside the Rhode Island District Court on February 13, 2025. At the time of his arrest, Reyes Calderon had just been released on bail following a state court appearance for a domestic violence charge.

The court was informed that Reyes Calderon became aggressive, resisting attempts by three officers to apply handcuffs. The struggle between Reyes Calderon and the officers lasted several minutes, leading one officer to use pepper spray to subdue him. Two officers sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Reyes Calderon pleaded guilty to a charge of resisting arrest of a federal officer. Sentencing is set for July 22, 2025, where a federal district judge will consider U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors before determining the sentence.

Assistant United States Attorneys Peter I. Roklan and Taylor A. Dean are prosecuting the case. The proceedings are part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at addressing illegal immigration and combatting transnational crime.
