Troy D. Murphy, a 34-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for escaping from custody, according to an announcement by Acting United States Attorney Matthew R. Molsen. The sentencing occurred on April 16, 2025, in a federal court in Omaha, presided over by United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher. Following his prison term, Murphy will serve a 3-year period of supervised release, as federal sentences do not include parole options.
Murphy's escape traces back to his prior sentencing on October 12, 2021, when he received a 77-month incarceration sentence due to convictions involving the transfer of a firearm to a prohibited person and possession of a firearm as a prohibited individual. During his incarceration, Murphy was housed at Dismas Charities in Omaha. Despite being a non-secure facility, inmates at Dismas Charities require authorization for departure.
The escape occurred on October 11, 2024, when Murphy left Dismas Charities without permission, as confirmed by security footage timed at 10:02 p.m. His location remained unknown until October 30, 2024, when he was apprehended by the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force at his mother's residence in Omaha. Murphy surrendered peacefully upon his arrest.
The United States Marshals Service conducted the investigation leading to Murphy's recapture.
