The Attorney General of Maine, Aaron M. Frey, responded to a federal lawsuit initiated by the Trump administration against the Maine Department of Education regarding Title IX. Frey expressed his disapproval of the lawsuit, labeling it as unsurprising due to the ongoing focus on Maine by federal authorities.
"This matter is about the protections afforded by Title IX and the Maine Human Rights Act," Frey stated, emphasizing Maine's confidence in their adherence to these laws. He criticized the Trump administration for filing a complaint that he claims lacks legal citation supporting their position.
Title IX, a significant statute aimed at ensuring equal educational opportunities, particularly in sports, for women and girls, was a central point of Frey's defense. "Title IX is about empowering women and girls by ensuring equal access to, and equal opportunity in educational programs," he said. Frey noted that the statute has positively impacted the lives of many women and girls.
The lawsuit follows an executive order from the Trump administration outlining its own interpretation of Title IX. However, Frey was quick to remind that "anyone with the most basic understanding of American civics understands the president does not create law nor interpret law."
Frey concluded by expressing readiness to defend Maine's position in court, saying, "We look forward to representing the state of Maine and defending the rule of law."
