Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced the launch of the "Safe to Rebuild" initiative in Western North Carolina, aimed at deterring property theft and supporting citizens rebuilding after Hurricane Helene. The initiative involves collaboration with law enforcement leaders, including State Bureau of Investigation Director Chip Hawley, Haywood County Sheriff Bill Wilke, and Waynesville Police Chief David Adams.
Attorney General Jeff Jackson emphasized the importance of safety in reconstruction efforts, stating, "We’re sending a clear message to North Carolinians – you should feel safe to rebuild in western North Carolina, and our office and law enforcement partners are working to keep it that way." He added that those attempting theft or fraud will face consequences.
Chip Hawley, Director of the State Bureau of Investigation, reiterated the agency's commitment: "As Western North Carolina recovers from the devastating effects of hurricane Helene, the SBI continues in their efforts, not only in the recovery effort but also as a partner to the NC Attorney General and our local law-enforcement partners as well to eradicate scams and fraud against homeowners and business owners while they attempt to rebuild their lives."
Haywood County Sheriff Bill Wilke expressed the priority of his office: "The highest priority of the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office is to protect our people and resources as we rebuild after the devastating floods of Helene." He acknowledged the support from the Attorney General’s Office, thanking them for their consistent backing.
David Adams, Police Chief of Waynesville, underscored the cooperative efforts by law enforcement agencies: "On behalf of the Waynesville Police Department, we are appreciative of the collective efforts of the NCDOJ, District Attorney’s Office, and fellow law enforcement agencies," with hopes to minimize fraudulent activities.
