A North Andover man has been sentenced in Boston federal court to over five years in prison for possessing firearms and explosives despite being a convicted felon. Daniel Medina, 65, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Patti B. Saris to 63 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release. Medina had pleaded guilty in December 2024 to several charges, including unlawful possession of a machine gun, explosives, and firearms as a felon. His sentence was scheduled for April 3, 2025, following his charge in October 2024.

The case originated on July 1, 2024, when law enforcement responded to an explosion near Medina's residence in North Andover. Upon investigation, they found damage to two vehicles and materials used in homemade explosive devices. A witness saw Medina fleeing towards his residence after the explosion.

A search of Medina's home uncovered a cache that included 32 firearms, 9,000 rounds of ammunition, and components for explosives. These items included rifles, pistols, shotguns, a Glock switch device, and various materials for manufacturing explosives. Notably, components such as potassium chlorate and aluminum powder matched the materials used in the explosion.

Medina is barred from possessing firearms and explosives due to a prior 2002 conviction for assault and battery, for which he served two and a half years in jail.

The case announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and James M. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, Boston Field Division. Agencies like the North Andover Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office supported the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm of the Major Crimes Unit led the prosecution.
