New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that 638 firearms were surrendered at a gun buyback event in Syracuse. This initiative, organized by the Office of the Attorney General in collaboration with the New York State Police and the Syracuse Police Department, is part of James' broader effort to reduce gun violence in New York. Since assuming office in 2019, Attorney General James has facilitated the removal of over 9,000 guns from the state.
Attorney General James explained that gun buyback events "empower members of local communities and nearby regions to turn in unwanted firearms and be a part of the solution against gun violence." She emphasized that each gun surrendered potentially prevents a tragedy. James extended her appreciation to the New York State Police, the Syracuse Police Department, and local government partners for their support.
The Syracuse event saw the return of 130 assault weapons, 333 handguns, two ghost guns, and 150 long guns. This outcome contributes to the more than 9,000 firearms removed from New York communities due to James' initiatives.
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh expressed gratitude to Attorney General James, stating, “Gun buybacks have and should continue to be part of our approach in Syracuse." Walsh highlighted the safety buybacks provide for those wishing to dispose of unwanted firearms.
Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile also thanked the Attorney General’s Office for organizing the event, indicating that such initiatives are crucial for reducing gun violence.
Lateef Johnson Kinsey, Director of the Mayor’s Office to Reduce Gun Violence, stressed the collective commitment to removing guns from local streets. He acknowledged Attorney General James' support in executing these programs.
