The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched an inquiry into the death of Bruce Boyd in Suffolk County. Boyd died on April 4, 2025, after an encounter with officers from the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD).

On that day, shortly after noon, SCPD officers were dispatched to a residence in Brentwood, Suffolk County, following a 911 call for a wellness check. Upon arrival, Boyd allegedly confronted the officers wielding two knives. Despite commands to drop the weapons, Boyd did not comply, leading an SCPD officer to discharge his weapon, injuring Boyd. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI examines every incident reported to it involving a police officer or peace officer who may have caused a person's death through an act or omission. This applies regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty, and regardless if the individual was armed or in custody. If OSI's preliminary assessment suggests an officer's potential involvement in the death, a complete investigation ensues.

The details of the case are preliminary and may evolve as the investigation continues.
