A North Carolina man, John Calvin Moore, aged 58, was sentenced to 84 months in federal prison following a traffic stop on December 22, 2023, that led to the discovery of a large quantity of illicit drugs. U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester announced the conviction and sentence.

Moore was stopped for speeding by the Oklahoma City Police Department on I-40 while traveling from California to North Carolina. Officers observed several gift-wrapped items in the trunk, which Moore claimed were Christmas presents. However, a K-9 unit detected drugs, leading to a search that unveiled over 42 pounds of methamphetamine and over 38 pounds of cocaine within the packages. The drugs, concealed in heat-sealed bags, were valued at over $350,000 on the street.

On August 30, 2024, Moore was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty on September 26, 2024, confessing to his intent to distribute meth and admitting firearm possession despite having a felony conviction in New Jersey for possessing weapons for an unlawful purpose.

U.S. District Judge Charles Goodwin sentenced Moore on March 28, 2025, to 84 months of imprisonment, followed by four years of supervised release. Judge Goodwin highlighted the crime's seriousness, noting Moore's role as a courier for controlled substances and his criminal past.

The case was investigated by several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI Oklahoma City Field Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Oklahoma City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew E. Davis led the prosecution.
