Sean Kingston, whose real name is Kisean Paul Anderson, and his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner, were found guilty of engaging in fraudulent activities that defrauded luxury merchandise vendors. The federal jury reached its verdict last week, convicting both individuals of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. As stated by officials, "for their scheme to defraud luxury merchandise vendors of over $1,000,000 in property."
Between April 2023 and March 2024, Anderson contacted vendors through a social media platform to purchase high-value items. He persuaded sellers with promises of promoting their products on his social media or by referencing well-known celebrities as potential clients. These meetings took place at Anderson's residences in Broward County. Payments were supposedly made through wire transfers; however, the receipts sent to sellers were fake, as obtained by Turner, including for items such as a bullet-proof Escalade, watches, and a large LED TV.
When sellers realized the wire transfers were fraudulent, they received little to no response from Anderson and Turner. Some victims got their money only after taking legal action or involving the authorities.
Sentencing in this case is scheduled for July 11, where both Anderson and Turner could face up to 20 years in prison for each count. U.S. District Judge David Liebowitz will preside over the proceedings.
U.S. Attorney Hayden O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida, Special Agent in Charge Rafael Barros of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS), Miami Field Office, and Sheriff Gregory Tony of the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) issued the case announcement. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the USSS Miami and BSO, while prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marc Anton and Trevor Jones.
