A Talihina resident, Jerad Daniel Abbott, 39, has been sentenced to 23 months in prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma confirmed the sentencing. Abbott's legal troubles began after he was found in possession of a 9mm Luger caliber semi-automatic pistol and ammunition on May 4, 2023. His prior conviction of a year’s imprisonment or more made this possession illegal.

The case was the result of an investigation conducted by the Latimer County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Abbott entered a guilty plea on October 15, 2024.

This case falls under the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through community and law enforcement collaboration. The project upholds key strategies such as building trust in communities, supporting preventive community organizations, setting strategic law enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.

Chief U.S. District Judge, the Honorable Ronald A. White, oversaw the case in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Abbott will remain with the U.S. Marshals Service before being transferred to a Bureau of Prisons facility. His sentence is non-paroleable.

The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jarrod A. Leaman and Edith A. Singer.
