A Cedar Rapids resident, Mycal Davis, received a federal sentence of two years for illegal firearm possession. Davis, aged 40, was sentenced on April 1, 2025, following his guilty plea made on November 7, 2024. He confessed to the charge of possessing a firearm as a felon.
The events leading to Davis's sentencing began on December 21, 2023, when police stopped a vehicle with Davis as a passenger. During the stop, officers conducted a search and noticed a weapon in Davis's waistband during a pat-down. Davis admitted possession of the firearm, which had an extended magazine loaded with 25 rounds. Officers also found pills, confirmed as methamphetamine, and over 50 grams of marijuana in Davis's belongings.
Chief Judge C.J. Williams of the United States District Court in Cedar Rapids delivered the two-year imprisonment verdict. Post-release, Davis will serve a supervised release term of three years. As per regulations, there is no parole in the federal system. Davis, previously released on bond, will surrender to the U.S. Marshal on April 28, 2025.
The proceedings are part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative to curb violent crime and gun violence. Launched on May 26, 2021, the program emphasizes building trust in communities, supporting preventive organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating the outcomes.
Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael Hudson prosecuted the case, with the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) conducting the investigation.
