The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa will observe National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) from April 6 through April 12, 2025. The theme for this year, "Connecting Healing," highlights the significance of shared humanity in fostering connections that lead to services, rights, and healing.
Throughout this week, various events across Iowa will celebrate the occasion. The events include the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week Commemoration on April 4 in Des Moines, the "Go the Distance for Crime Victims 5K Run/Walk" on April 5 in Marion, and presentations titled "From War to Wellness: A Journey of Resilience and Transformation" on April 8 and April 10 at the Des Moines Area Community College.
United States Attorney Timothy T. Duax announced the recipients of the Law Enforcement Victim Services Award which recognizes law enforcement officers in Iowa who provide outstanding service to crime victims. Investigator Tracy Johnson from the Cedar Rapids Police Department was honored for her investigation into a human trafficking case involving a minor victim. Johnson's work, described as compassionate and victim-centered, was crucial in the conviction of Jarod Anderson, who is awaiting sentencing, and Tana Torres, who was sentenced to up to eight years in prison.
Detective Chris Thomas of the Sioux City Police Department also received the award. His work led to the successful prosecution of Bobby Ray Rhoden, who was found guilty of several crimes, including kidnapping and abuse. Detective Thomas's dedication and perseverance in building trust with the victim were instrumental in securing testimony that contributed to Rhoden’s conviction. Rhoden is scheduled to be sentenced on May 2, 2025.
