A Portland man, Tyson Dyer, 38, was sentenced to two years in prison for being a felon in possession of ammunition. The sentencing was delivered by U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen in Portland's U.S. District Court. Dyer will also undergo three years of supervised release following his prison term.
Court records reveal that in January 2023, Portland Police Department officers responded to a 911 report about suspicious activity involving a vehicle. Officers found Dyer alone in the vehicle, which was registered to him, with signs of recent use of a substance inside. An empty gun holster was visible, and a search revealed five loaded magazines and 103 rounds of ammunition. Dyer's prior convictions for drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession prohibited him from having ammunition.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with assistance from Portland's Police Department. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement and community efforts. The Department of Justice enhanced this strategy on May 26, 2021, focusing on community trust, support for preventive organizations, strategic enforcement, and impact measurement. Further details on PSN can be accessed at the Department of Justice's website.
