Casey D. Laffey, a partner and co-chair of Reed Smith’s Global Commercial Disputes Group, has been named to Crain’s New York Business’ 2025 roster of Notable Litigators and Trial Attorneys in New York, the global law firm announced. Laffey leads the U.S. members of the group, comprising the largest litigation practice at the firm, and he oversees Reed Smith’s focus on highlighting and expanding its deep experience in complex trial work nationwide.
A graduate of St. John’s University School of Law, Laffey is an experienced trial lawyer with more than two decades of litigating commercial and financial services disputes in federal and state courts and complex arbitration hearings. He is particularly renowned for successfully representing hedge funds, private equity firms, liquidators of failed hedge funds, banks, and receivers of failed banks in finance and investment-related litigation and has done so in matters seeking damages in excess of $2 billion. Laffey is currently representing the receiver of the second largest bank to fail in U.S. history with respect to its Chapter 11 bankruptcy and litigation issues, as well as other significant bank receiverships and hedge fund liquidation estates.
“I am delighted to be recognized by Crain’s New York Business for my litigation experience and results,” Laffey said. “This is a singular honor that reflects not only my personal successes, but also the significant support and resources provided by Reed Smith, one of the nation’s most experienced and in-demand law firms serving a wide range of financial services clients.”
Laffey also has considerable proficiency representing clients in the sports and entertainment industries, including counseling sports and music talent and their managers/agents on day-to-day litigation and other matters. For example, he has represented an international pop star in a large litigation adverse to her former business managers; another international musician in two large litigations adverse to her former manager and former assistant; a high-profile athlete in a complex dispute adverse to a professional sports organization; Hollywood producers in contract- and real estate-related litigation; boxing promoters in both litigation and arbitration arising out of high-profile boxing events; and a significant music production company in disputes relating to large electronic dance music festivals.
Laffey also has extensive experience litigating large real estate and construction disputes throughout the country, in cross-border disputes, and in defending complex class actions. He also oversees Reed Smith’s Elder Law Clinic program with the New York City Bar Association, where he helps elderly citizens in need obtain legal representation and advice on a wide range of issues.
“Casey is a consummate professional,” said Reed Smith Global Managing Partner Casey Ryan. “He is an exceptional trial lawyer, a quintessential team player, and a tremendous asset for his clients. We congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.”
