James Mailhiot, Jr. from Rutland, Vermont, has been sentenced to four years of probation for federal income tax evasion. This decision was announced by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont. U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Lanthier also mandated that Mailhiot complete 200 hours of community service and pay a restitution of $296,618, along with a $25,000 fine. According to the court, Mailhiot is ready to settle his restitution obligation immediately post-sentencing.

The tax evasion charge was filed on November 14, 2024, against Mailhiot, who has owned and operated a roofing business with gross revenues of approximately $1.6 million from 2019 to 2022. During this period, Mailhiot reportedly provided his out-of-state accountant with incomplete financial records. This led to substantial understatements of his taxable income and resulted in underpayments amounting to $296,000 over those years.

The investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation. Mailhiot is represented by attorney Mark Kaplan, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Waples is prosecuting the case.
