The United States Attorney’s Office in Boston has initiated legal proceedings to reclaim approximately $23 million in cryptocurrency. The funds are allegedly linked to wire fraud and conspiracy charges involving market manipulation and wire fraud activities.
Authorities have seized Tether (USDT) and Circle (USDC) from cryptocurrency wallets managed by Gotbit Consulting LLC. Stablecoins, such as Tether and Circle, maintain their value equivalent to the U.S. dollar.
On March 21, 2025, Gotbit, known as a "market maker" in the cryptocurrency sector, and its founder, Aleksei Andriunin, admitted guilt in federal court in Boston. They faced charges related to fraudulent manipulation of cryptocurrency trading volumes for the benefit of client companies. In a plea agreement, Gotbit acknowledged the cryptocurrencies involved are subject to civil forfeiture and consented to forfeiture.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley, along with Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carol Head is managing the forfeiture case, with assistance from Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher J. Markham and David M. Holcomb, who are working on the criminal case.
It is important to note that the details outlined in the civil forfeiture complaint remain as allegations.
