Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has advised consumers to delete their accounts with the genetic testing company 23andMe, following the company's announcement of filing for bankruptcy. The company, known for its direct-to-consumer genetic testing services, collects and analyzes individuals' genetic codes.
"Given the uncertainty surrounding 23andMe’s bankruptcy, consumers should seriously consider deleting their accounts to protect their personal genetic data," stated Attorney General Marshall. He emphasized that without clear assurances regarding consumer privacy or future handling of accounts, deleting an account may be the safest option to prevent sensitive information from being misused. "Our office is closely watching the bankruptcy proceedings and plans to be actively engaged to ensure private information is protected according to Alabama law."
This warning comes in light of a data breach at 23andMe discovered in October 2023, which exposed the personal information of nearly seven million Americans. Attorney General Marshall has been monitoring this situation as part of an ongoing investigation.
Consumers who wish to delete their accounts can do so by following specific steps on the 23andMe website. They are advised first to download any desired data before proceeding with deletion requests.
