Julian Jared Gill, a 34-year-old resident of Charlotte, has been sentenced to over nine years in prison for gun possession and assaulting two Deputy U.S. Marshals. The announcement was made by Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
The sentencing follows Gill's arrest in 2022 by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team. He was found with a loaded Glock pistol equipped with a high-capacity magazine, which he attempted to hide in a hotel room toilet tank before surrendering to authorities. As a felon, Gill is prohibited from possessing firearms.
In 2023, while in custody and appearing in federal court for firearm possession charges, Gill became upset at a judge's ruling and subsequently assaulted two Deputy U.S. Marshals outside the courtroom.
Gill pleaded guilty on February 28, 2024, to charges of possession of a firearm by a felon and felony assault, resist and impede a federal officer. His criminal history includes multiple convictions dating back to 2007.
District Court Judge Michael F. Urbanski sentenced Gill to 70 months for the firearm charge and an additional 41 months for assaulting law enforcement officials. These sentences will be served consecutively, totaling 111 months.
U.S. Attorney Ferguson emphasized that "attacks on our law enforcement officers cannot be tolerated," hoping the sentence serves as a deterrent.
The case was investigated by the ATF, USMS, and CMPD. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Kelly prosecuted the case.
