Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has issued a warning to residents about the rise in phone scams across the state. These scams are becoming more sophisticated, with perpetrators using deceptive tactics to trick individuals into sending money, purchasing gift cards, or making cryptocurrency transactions under false pretenses.

Marshall emphasized the importance of caution when receiving unexpected calls. "If you receive a call that sounds strange, makes an offer that seems too good to be true, or pressures you into sending money—hang up immediately," he stated. He advised against providing personal or financial information over the phone and warned against agreeing to send money via Bitcoin machines, gift cards, or wire transfers. "Scammers prey on fear and urgency. If you ever feel unsure about a call, take a step back, hang up, and contact our office. Staying informed is the best way to protect yourself from becoming a victim."

The Attorney General's office has received reports from Alabama consumers about various scam calls. To help combat this issue, Marshall offered safety tips for residents.

For further assistance on avoiding scams, Alabamians can visit the Attorney General's website or call the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-392-5658.
