California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a consumer alert to inform Californians about free or low-cost tax filing options as Tax Day approaches. The IRS Direct File and CalFile programs allow eligible taxpayers in California to file their 2024 federal and state taxes without charge.
Attorney General Bonta emphasized the financial benefits of utilizing these services, stating, "For many families, tax season brings an opportunity to get a catch up on bills, build some financial breathing room for emergencies, or finally take the car in for repairs." He encouraged residents to explore these options instead of paying for third-party tax preparation services when they might qualify for free assistance.
The IRS Direct File service enables eligible individuals to electronically submit their federal tax returns directly with the IRS. Similarly, the Franchise Tax Board’s CalFile program provides a free e-filing service for state tax returns. These programs aim to simplify the filing process and help consumers access refunds and claim important benefits like California’s Earned Income Tax Credit and Young Child Tax Credit.
Additional resources are available through programs such as the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which offers free help to those earning $64,000 or less annually, people with disabilities, and those who struggle with English. The Tax Counseling for the Elderly program provides specialized assistance for taxpayers over 60 years old.
Californians can also apply for cash back or reduced taxes under the Earned Income Tax Credit and California Earned Income Tax Credit programs. Those needing more time can request an automatic extension using IRS Free File until October 15.
Bonta advised caution when hiring a tax preparer: "If you decide to hire a tax preparer, make sure your tax preparer is reputable and qualified." Only specific professionals are authorized in California to prepare returns for a fee.
Anyone suspecting they have been targeted by a tax-related scam can report it via oag.ca.gov/report or directly with the IRS. More information on protecting against fraud is available at https://oag.ca.gov/consumers/general/taxes.
