Ronald Butler, a 44-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has been arrested and charged in connection with an assault on Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers that occurred on March 11, 2025. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr., and Chief Pamela Smith of the MPD.
Butler faces charges of felony assault on a police officer after surrendering to authorities. He is the fifth individual to be charged in this case. Others previously charged include Donte Butler, Sr., 47, with felony assault and resisting arrest; Donte Butler, Jr., 21, with misdemeanor assault and resisting arrest; Frederick Simms, 39, with misdemeanor assault and resisting arrest; and Jermaine Irving, 21, with resisting arrest and public consumption of marijuana.
Court documents reveal that the incident began around 3:59 p.m. when MPD's Seventh District Special Missions Unit encountered a defendant allegedly consuming marijuana publicly at the 2600 block of Birney Place Southeast. During this interaction, some defendants reportedly assaulted the officers.
The charges are part of "Make D.C. Safe Again," an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime in Washington D.C. The Metropolitan Police Department is leading the investigation while Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke Albi prosecutes the case.
It is important to note that these charges are allegations at this stage, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
