The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer-involved death that occurred in the Town of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, on Sunday, March 2, 2025. The incident began when Iowa County Sheriff's Office Deputy Jeffry Okey attempted a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 18/151 near mile marker 52 in Iowa County at approximately 6:21 p.m.

The subject of the stop, Bo Austin Johnson, aged 28, did not comply and led officers on a pursuit. Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Bryan Baumann joined the chase shortly after it began and took over as the primary officer. The pursuit concluded when Mr. Johnson crashed near mile marker 65 in the Town of Blue Mounds. Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene where Mr. Johnson was pronounced dead.

No law enforcement officers or members of the public were injured during this incident.

The DCI is heading the investigation with assistance from a DCI Crime Response Specialist, Dane County Sheriff’s Office, and Mount Horeb Police Department. All involved law enforcement agencies are cooperating fully with DCI's investigation.

As part of their ongoing efforts, DCI continues to review evidence and ascertain the facts surrounding this event. Upon completion, investigative reports will be submitted to the Dane County District Attorney’s office for further action.

Media inquiries are directed to contact Wisconsin DOJ for more information.
