A federal grand jury in the District of New Jersey has indicted three men from New Jersey on charges related to their alleged involvement in a drug trafficking organization. The indictment includes 12 counts and was announced by U.S. Attorney John Giordano.

The accused, George Lopez, Reinaldo Cruz, and Joel Hernandez, face various charges connected to the distribution of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine in Newark. Specifically, each is charged with conspiracy to distribute these substances. Additional charges against George Lopez include possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon, and possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Reinaldo Cruz faces charges including possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine as well as illegal firearm possession. Joel Hernandez is charged similarly for methamphetamine and cocaine distribution intentions.

The indictment reveals that Cruz and Hernandez were involved in distributing drugs around Essex and Union Counties from several locations. Meanwhile, Lopez allegedly provided guidance regarding drug supplies while incarcerated.

The investigation involved intercepting communications, surveillance operations, controlled purchases of narcotics, seizures, and telephone record analysis. Authorities report that over 500 grams of methamphetamine, 5 kilograms of cocaine, and 40 grams of fentanyl were distributed by the organization.

Penalties for the crimes vary significantly: the conspiracy count could result in a minimum sentence of 10 years up to life imprisonment with fines reaching $10 million; other charges carry sentences ranging from five years to 40 years with fines between $1 million to $5 million; firearm-related offenses have penalties up to 15 years or more if associated with drug crimes.

U.S. Attorney Giordano acknowledged contributions from numerous law enforcement agencies including special agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration under Special Agent Cheryl Ortiz's direction among others across multiple departments within New Jersey.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Eli Jacobs and John Mezzanotte are handling prosecution efforts on behalf of the government.

"The charges contained in the complaint are merely accusations," noted authorities emphasizing that "the defendants are considered innocent unless proven guilty."
