Attorney General Kris Mayes, along with a coalition of state attorneys general, has taken action to obtain information regarding the termination of veterans and their spouses under the Trump Administration. The coalition has submitted Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). These requests aim to uncover details about how many veterans and their spouses have been affected by recent mass terminations of federal employees.
“Veterans and their families have sacrificed for this country, and they deserve respect—not mass firings driven by political agendas,” said Attorney General Mayes. “If the Trump Administration is purging veterans and their spouses from the federal workforce, the public has a right to know. My office will do everything in its power to hold this administration accountable under the law.”
The FOIA requests specifically seek documents that detail how many veterans and their spouses have been terminated since January 20, 2025. The attorneys general are looking for data on:
- The number of terminated federal employees entitled to veterans’ preference in employment.
- Data on terminations involving federal employees who are veterans or spouses of veterans.
- Any correspondence related to these terminations, particularly concerning Executive Orders 14210 and 14217 which direct significant workforce reductions.
Attorney General Mayes spearheaded this initiative with support from her counterparts in California, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, and Washington.
Copies of these FOIA requests are available for public review.
