Marc H. Silverman, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Elbert Llorrens, 32, from New Haven, has pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The plea was entered before U.S. District Judge Stefan R. Underhill in Bridgeport.

Court documents and statements revealed that on March 1, 2024, Llorrens possessed a loaded Smith & Wesson model SD40 VE .40 caliber pistol. Previously, in March 2017, he had been sentenced in Hartford federal court to 60 months imprisonment and five years of supervised release for multiple carjackings and armed robberies. He was on federal supervised release when he possessed the firearm.

Federal law prohibits individuals previously convicted of a felony from possessing firearms that have moved in interstate or foreign commerce. Unlawful possession carries a maximum penalty of up to 15 years imprisonment. Llorrens is scheduled for sentencing on June 4 and has been detained since March 1, 2024.

The investigation involved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), along with the New Haven Police Department and West Haven Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel E. Cummings is prosecuting the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration among various stakeholders to develop comprehensive solutions targeting violent offenders while supporting prevention and reentry programs.
