Attorney General Josh Kaul is pushing for significant investment in the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratories (WSCL) as part of the 2025-2027 state budget. In an effort to highlight the importance of this investment, AG Kaul hosted a tour for legislators at WSCL, offering them a glimpse into the critical work performed by the crime lab professionals.

“These tours provide a window into the complex and important work conducted by the knowledgeable, hard-working team at the crime labs,” said AG Kaul. “We must ensure that the labs have the resources they need to respond efficiently as they assist in keeping our communities safe.”

The Wisconsin Department of Justice has requested substantial funding in the upcoming state budget to address longstanding underinvestment in public safety and community services. This request includes funding for nineteen additional positions at WSCL, with ten new DNA analysts and three controlled substances analysts among them.

Advancements in scientific methods like probabilistic genotyping and forensic investigative genetic genealogy have enhanced WSCL's capabilities but also increased complexity in DNA testing. The demand for DNA analysis has surged over recent years, especially concerning sexual assault cases which require intricate interpretation due to mixed DNA samples.

Controlled substances constitute a significant portion of forensic evidence submitted to WSCL, often requiring analysts to provide expert testimony across Wisconsin. This travel reduces time available for testing, underscoring the need for more analyst positions.

The WSCL offers a range of services including toxicology, drug identification, trace evidence analysis, firearms and toolmark analysis, fingerprint and footwear analysis, ten print comparison, photo work, forensic imaging, and crime scene response. The lab employs various specialists who conduct scientific testing and impartial forensic analysis for criminal cases throughout Wisconsin.
