The Judicial Council of Hawaiʻi is actively seeking applicants for upcoming vacancies on two significant state commissions: the Hawaiʻi State Ethics Commission and the Campaign Spending Commission. These positions are voluntary, with members serving a four-year term from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2029. Members will have their reasonable expenses reimbursed.

To qualify, applicants must be U.S. citizens residing in Hawaiʻi and cannot hold any other public office. The Ethics Commission addresses ethical issues related to legislators, registered lobbyists, and state employees. It consists of five members responsible for investigating complaints, offering advisory opinions, and enforcing decisions. According to the Hawaiʻi State Constitution, commission members are prohibited “from taking an active part in political management or political campaigns.”

The Campaign Spending Commission also comprises five members who ensure campaign finance integrity by enforcing laws, educating the public, administering public financing, and training campaign committees.

Vacancies on both commissions are filled by gubernatorial appointment from nominees provided by the Judicial Council or through reappointment subject to term limits.

Interested candidates must submit an application with a resume and three letters of recommendation attesting to their character and integrity. Applications should be post-marked, emailed, faxed, or hand-delivered by March 31, 2025.

Applications can be obtained from the Hawaiʻi State Judiciary website or by contacting the Judicial Council at 808-539-4702.
