Memphis, TN – Sanjeev Kumar, a 44-year-old gynecologist, has been charged with enticing four victims to travel interstate for illegal sexual activity, adulterating medical devices for reuse on patients, and healthcare fraud. This announcement was made by Reagan Fondren, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.
The indictment claims that between September 2019 and June 2024, Kumar enticed the victims to his Memphis medical offices for purposes involving criminal sexual activities as per Tennessee law. The charges further allege that Kumar conducted unnecessary gynecologic procedures using improperly sanitized or reused medical devices without informing his patients. He reportedly billed Medicare and Medicaid as if each procedure involved new or properly reprocessed devices.
Acting U.S. Attorney Fondren stated: “Kumar was consistently the top-paid provider in Tennessee for Medicare and Medicaid for hysteroscopy biopsy services, and he profited substantially from these criminal acts. The allegations indicate that Kumar acted as a predator in a white coat and used the cover of conducting medical examinations to put his patients at risk and enrich himself.”
Joseph E. Carrico of the FBI Nashville Field Office commented: “This doctor put profit ahead of patients.” He urged potential victims to come forward via www.fbi.gov/KumarVictims to assist in the investigation.
Kelly Blackmon from HHS-OIG emphasized their commitment to working with law enforcement partners against those exploiting patients and federal health programs.
The case is under investigation by HHS-OIG, FDA-OCI, FBI, and TBI. It is important to note that all charges are accusations at this stage; Kumar remains presumed innocent until proven guilty through due process.
Fondren acknowledged Assistant United States Attorneys Lynn Crum, Scott Smith, Sarah Pazar Williams, along with law enforcement partners involved in this case.
