Public invited to comment on judicial nominees for Second Circuit vacancy

Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald has announced the opening of a public comment period for judicial nominees to fill a vacancy in the District Family Court of the Second Circuit, which covers Maui, Moloka‘i, and Lāna‘i.

The Judicial Selection Commission has submitted four names for consideration: Bevanne J. Bowers, Lance D. Collins, Zachary P. Raidmae, and Sonya H. Toma.

Bevanne J. Bowers is associated with the Law Office of Bevanne Bowers and serves as Executive Director of Mediation Services of Maui, Inc., along with her role as a per diem District Family Court Judge in the Second Circuit. She graduated from the University of Memphis and joined the Hawaii State Bar in 2012.

Lance D. Collins works at his own law office and acts as a per diem District and District Family Court Judge in the Second Circuit. He is an alumnus of the William S. Richardson School of Law and was admitted to practice law in Hawaii in 2005.

Zachary P. Raidmae is employed as a Deputy Public Defender with the Office of the Public Defender. He graduated from Nova Southeastern University and became part of the Hawaii State Bar in 2010.

Sonya H. Toma serves as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney with Maui's Department of the Prosecuting Attorney. She also graduated from William S. Richardson School of Law and was admitted to practice law in Hawaii in 2007.

Chief Justice Recktenwald can assign judges to either district or district family court calendars; therefore, public comments regarding any nominee's qualifications or character related to these assignments are welcome until March 7, 2025.

The chosen candidate will require Senate confirmation before taking office.
