A Miami man has been charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl linked to an overdose death, according to South Florida's United States Attorney. The accused, 20-year-old Domenic Pedre, faces charges related to fentanyl distribution and possession of a machinegun conversion device known as a "Glock switch." This device can transform a semi-automatic pistol into a fully automatic weapon.
The allegations state that from January 2024 through October 30, 2024, Pedre was involved in distributing fentanyl across South Florida. This includes the dose associated with an August 2024 overdose death in Miami-Dade County. If convicted for distribution resulting in death or serious injury, Pedre could face a minimum of 20 years to life imprisonment. Additionally, the U.S. government seeks forfeiture of $105,563 believed to be proceeds from the conspiracy.
Pedre also faces up to 10 years in prison for possessing the Glock switch device. It is important to note that these charges are accusations, and Pedre is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida and DEA Special Agent in Charge Deanne L. Reuter of the Miami Field Office. The case was investigated by multiple agencies including the DEA, Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, City of Miami Police Department's Gang Intelligence Unit, with support from other local entities.
Fentanyl is highlighted as a significant threat due to its potency and widespread impact across various demographics. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), synthetic opioids like fentanyl are involved in numerous overdose deaths daily.
