Kasey Todd Reed, a 32-year-old resident of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Utah, has been sentenced to 96 months in prison. Senior U.S. District Court Judge David Sam also ordered three years of supervised release following his imprisonment. Reed pleaded guilty on December 6, 2024, to charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm within Indian Country.

The case arose from an incident on May 30, 2022, when Reed was involved in a domestic dispute with his partner. According to court documents and statements made during his hearings, after being pepper-sprayed during the altercation, Reed threatened to return to his partner's home to inflict harm. Upon returning, he fired five rounds from a loaded .38 revolver at her residence while driving past.

Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah announced the sentencing. The FBI Salt Lake City Field Office’s Vernal Resident Agency conducted the investigation into the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sam Pead prosecuted the matter.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing gun violence and other violent crimes by fostering cooperation between law enforcement agencies and communities. The program emphasizes trust-building within communities, support for community-based violence prevention organizations, strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes. More information about PSN can be found at Justice.gov/PSN.
