Danny Nunez has admitted guilt in a federal court for supplying fentanyl that led to the death of a 25-year-old woman, referred to as "L.P." in court records. The incident occurred on September 11, 2024, and the woman's parents found her deceased the following day.
The plea agreement outlines evidence from cell phone records and witness statements confirming that the victim purchased fentanyl from Nunez on the day of her death. Subsequently, on October 3, 2024, Nunez was arrested during an operation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Diego's Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team (FAST), alongside the Escondido Police Department. He was apprehended while attempting to sell two baggies of fentanyl weighing a total of 8.9 grams to undercover agents.
Nunez will face sentencing on May 19, 2025, before U.S. District Court Judge Thomas J. Whelan. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Van Demark is prosecuting the case.
HSI San Diego FAST is a collaborative task force established in August 2022 with state, local, and federal partners aiming to combat criminal organizations involved in smuggling and distributing fentanyl within San Diego County. The task force focuses on reducing overdose rates by targeting distribution networks.
Danny Nunez is charged with attempted distribution of fentanyl under 21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1), carrying a maximum penalty of twenty years per count if convicted.
The investigation involves Homeland Security Investigations and the Escondido Police Department.
