Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Andrew Birge, has announced the sentencing of Matthew Joseph Sheehan from Iron River. Sheehan, aged 45, received an 84-month federal prison sentence for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.
Court records reveal that investigators had information about Sheehan's activities involving out-of-state trips to procure illicit drugs such as methamphetamine, MDMA, and cocaine for distribution in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In June 2023, during a traffic stop in Iron County due to a traffic infraction, officers discovered nearly a pound of methamphetamine, a smaller amount of cocaine, and more than $6,000 in cash on him. A subsequent search at his residence yielded additional drugs and over $37,000.
The investigation involved multiple agencies including the Michigan State Police, Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Iron River Police Department, and Iron County Sheriff’s Office.
