A coordinated law enforcement initiative named Operation Double Down has concluded successfully, targeting the trafficking of fentanyl and other illegal substances. The operation involved collaboration between local, state, and federal agencies to combat the distribution of these drugs.

The Arizona Attorney General's Office played a significant role in this effort, working with multiple agencies to uncover a transnational criminal organization operating in both the United States and Mexico. This organization was involved in selling and distributing illegal drugs worth millions of dollars while laundering money to evade detection.

Attorney General Kris Mayes stated, “Operation Double Down is a powerful example of what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies at every level work together to combat the deadly flow of fentanyl and other illicit drugs into our communities.” She expressed gratitude towards the agents, prosecutors, and law enforcement partners for their efforts.

The seven-month investigation aimed to gather intelligence on individuals transporting illegal drugs. It resulted in 25 arrest warrants issued by state prosecutors who collaborated with the Phoenix Police Department and Drug Enforcement Bureau investigators. Significant seizures during Operation Double Down included approximately 1.7 million suspected fentanyl pills, over 26 kilograms of fentanyl powder, just over 24 kilograms of cocaine, 370.2 pounds of methamphetamine, 13 pounds of heroin, nearly $210,000 in cash, 14 vehicles, and 28 firearms.

Phoenix Police Department Interim Chief Michael Sullivan remarked on the operation's success: “The outcome of this operation is impressive and a testament to the partnerships between local and federal police agencies and prosecutors in this community.”

DEA Phoenix Special Agent Cheri Oz emphasized ongoing efforts: “DEA stands alongside our partners as a united front... We are law enforcement strong, working together like never before.”

Arizona HIDTA Director Dawn Mertz noted the importance of intelligence-driven investigations: “This task force... completed this mission with support from the Arizona High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA).”

Operation Double Down began in April 2024 and continued through November 2024. Though active processing of indictments continues, its success demonstrates effective collaboration among various law enforcement entities.
