A Baltimore man, Igor Yasinov, 35, has been sentenced to 110 months in prison and three years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Julie R. Rubin for four counts of assaulting federal correctional officers and inflicting bodily injury.
Phil Selden, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, announced the sentencing alongside Clinton J. Fuchs, U.S. Marshal for the District of Maryland, and Carolyn J. Scruggs, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
The incident occurred on November 16, 2021, at the Chesapeake Detention Facility (CDF) in Baltimore, Maryland. Evidence presented during Yasinov's four-day trial showed that he assaulted several correctional staff members at this pretrial detention facility housing federal inmates under an agreement between the U.S. Marshal Service (USMS) and the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS).
Yasinov's actions began with breaking a control-center window using a broomstick which led to minor injuries for himself. While being transported to receive medical treatment, he threatened correctional officers escorting him. Following treatment, Yasinov was moved to a segregation unit where he became uncooperative upon learning he would not return to his original housing unit.
During attempts by officers to escort him back into his cell, Yasinov resisted violently by sweeping one officer’s leg causing multiple officers to fall. Officers managed to apply leg irons on Yasinov and carry him back into his cell where he continued fighting until eventually relenting.
In one final act before officers could exit his cell safely after removing leg irons as ordered face-to-wall procedure began; however as last officer exited - charged group slamming body flailing floor kicking striking resulting several sustaining injuries including fractured tibia head neck back limbs damages inflicted upon them.
Acting United States Attorney Selden commended "the U.S. Marshal Service for their work in the investigation." He also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Aubin and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Gordin who prosecuted this case.
