A Honduran national, Jose Pavon-Fermin, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for illegally reentering the United States after deportation. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford, as announced by Marc H. Silverman, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Court documents reveal that Pavon-Fermin was previously convicted in 2018 of sexual assault in the third degree and unlawful restraint in the first degree. He received a 10-year jail sentence, suspended after serving four and one-half years, followed by 10 years of probation. Additionally, he was required to register as a sex offender for life. After completing his state sentence, he was deported from the U.S. in June 2021.
Pavon-Fermin returned to the U.S., where he was arrested on January 31, 2023, in Norwalk on charges including breach of peace and criminal trespass. Released on bond, he failed to appear in state court leading to a rearrest order in April 2023. He did not comply with the requirement to register as a sex offender.
An indictment for illegal reentry and failure to register as a sex offender was issued against him on October 4, 2023. Pavon-Fermin was subsequently arrested on March 7, 2024, in Rustburg, Virginia and has remained detained since then. On November 14, 2024, he pleaded guilty to illegal reentry.
The investigation into this case involved the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement along with the United States Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Neeraj N. Patel and Alexis L. Beyerlein prosecuted the case.
