A Smyrna man has been found guilty of several felonies related to the rape of a female relative. The Delaware Department of Justice emphasized the significance of these cases in their efforts to deliver justice for victims who have suffered severe trauma, often inflicted by someone they knew.
Attorney General Kathy Jennings stated, "These cases, while incredibly difficult for all involved, are profoundly important to our team at the Delaware Department of Justice as we work to exact justice for those who have experienced unimaginable terror, and in many cases, betrayal at the hands of someone they knew." She expressed gratitude towards the prosecutors and Smyrna Police for their dedication and acknowledged the bravery of victims who come forward.
The incident occurred on May 31, 2024, when James Wheeler, shortly after being released from prison for an assault conviction, threatened his victim with a knife and raped her. On February 7, Wheeler was convicted by a Kent County jury on charges including Rape First Degree, Attempted Rape First Degree, Possession of a Deadly Weapon During Commission of a Felony, Terroristic Threatening, and Aggravated Menacing.
Wheeler's sentencing date is yet to be determined. He faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 32 years and could potentially receive multiple life sentences under Delaware law.
