California Attorney General Rob Bonta, along with 11 other attorneys general, has issued a joint statement regarding their lawsuit against the Trump Administration. The case concerns the alleged illegal granting of access to Americans' private information to Elon Musk and members of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The statement highlights an incident where "Elon Musk and his team got into our nation’s central payment system in the Treasury Department," which reportedly gave them unauthorized access to sensitive personal data, including Social Security numbers and bank account information.
In response, the coalition filed a lawsuit aimed at halting this breach. "To protect our states’ residents, we filed a lawsuit to stop the madness," they stated. A court order was obtained shortly after, blocking Musk and DOGE from accessing any further personal information and mandating the destruction of all records acquired.
The attorneys general emphasized that despite Musk's wealth, he is not above the law: "Elon Musk may be the richest man in the world, but the law is clear: he has no authority to access your private information."
Attorney General Bonta and his colleagues are now seeking a preliminary injunction to maintain restrictions on unauthorized data access through the Treasury's payment system. The statement was supported by attorneys general from New York, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Oregon.
