U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath has concluded her role as the chief federal law enforcement officer for the Southern District of California, covering San Diego and Imperial counties. Her tenure ended on February 12, 2025, following a communication from the White House at the President's direction.
"It has been an honor to serve as U.S. Attorney," McGrath stated, reflecting on her time in office. She expressed pride in her work with the team and partnerships with law enforcement agencies and communities.
McGrath was appointed by President Biden and confirmed by the Senate before taking office on October 5, 2023. During her leadership, she focused on combating fentanyl distribution, prosecuting scams targeting vulnerable groups, addressing firearm offenses, fighting corruption, enforcing civil rights, and protecting the environment.
Significant achievements under McGrath include pioneering charges against individuals smuggling greenhouse gases across borders and securing life sentences for brothers involved in a high-profile murder case. The office also enhanced efforts against elder fraud in collaboration with local authorities and charged numerous individuals for public-assistance benefit thefts.
A notable financial settlement during her term involved Wynn Las Vegas agreeing to a $130 million forfeiture related to unlicensed money transmitting businesses. Additionally, a conviction was secured against a defendant involved in a $35 million fraud scheme.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office under McGrath achieved over $41 million in settlements and recoveries from various fraud cases, including those linked to healthcare and defense procurement under the False Claims Act.
Following McGrath's departure, Andrew R. Haden steps in as Acting United States Attorney pursuant to the Vacancies Reform Act.
