Mervin D. Nordeng, born in Watford City in 1942, pursued a diverse career path that spanned engineering and law. He earned an electrical engineering degree from North Dakota State University in 1964 and subsequently worked for the Army Corps of Engineers in Omaha, Nebraska, for four years.

In 1969, Nordeng shifted his focus to law and attended the University of North Dakota Law School. After graduating in 1971, he served as a clerk with the North Dakota Supreme Court for one year. His legal career progressed when he moved to Fargo in 1972 to work as a full-time assistant to State’s Attorney John O. Garaas.

Nordeng's commitment to public service led him to become the first full-time Cass County State’s Attorney in 1974, a position he held until 1979 before transitioning into private practice.

Arrangements are pending for Mervin D. Nordeng's memorial services.
