Attorney General Dave Sunday has alerted residents of Pennsylvania to a new cyber scam involving PayPal. The scam consists of fraudsters sending fake invoices through PayPal, urging recipients to make payments. These emails often appear urgent and contain a toll-free number that directs victims to the scammers, who attempt to gather personal information.
"Scammers are well aware that many Pennsylvanians rely on PayPal to send and receive money to their friends and family, or as part of a small business," Attorney General Dave Sunday stated. He emphasized the increasing sophistication of such scams and advised caution when sharing personal information or making online payments. "Our Bureau of Consumer Protection is standing by to assist Pennsylvanians who are harmed," he added.
Consumers are encouraged to verify the sender's email address, ensuring it is from "service@paypal.com." If unsure about an invoice, especially if unrecognized, it is safest to ignore it. For concerns regarding suspicious invoices, individuals should contact PayPal customer service at PayPal.com.
The Office of Attorney General also welcomes complaints from consumers as awareness can help protect others from similar fraudulent activities.
