New York Attorney General Letitia James has made public police body-worn camera footage and dashboard camera video from an investigation into the death of Christopher Ferguson. Ferguson died on December 5, 2024, after an encounter with New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers in Brooklyn.
On that day, NYPD officers pursued Ferguson and found him near the intersection of Utica Avenue and Park Place in Brooklyn as he attempted to exit a car. According to reports, Ferguson allegedly pointed a gun at the officers, prompting them to discharge their service weapons. Ferguson was struck and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. A firearm with an extended magazine was recovered at the scene.
The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) from the Attorney General’s Office released footage captured by body-worn cameras and a police car dashboard camera during the incident. This release is part of Attorney General James’ initiative to enhance transparency and build public trust by making such footage available during OSI investigations.
Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI reviews every reported incident where a police or peace officer might have caused a person's death through action or inaction. The law applies whether the officer is on-duty or off-duty, regardless of whether the deceased was armed or unarmed, or in custody. If an assessment suggests possible officer involvement in causing death, OSI conducts a comprehensive investigation.
Releasing this footage does not imply any stance regarding the guilt or innocence of any party involved in criminal proceedings nor does it suggest if anyone will face charges.
