A man who fired shots outside a residence in San Angelo has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for a federal gun crime. The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Chad Meacham.

Edgar Eduardo Gamez-Rodriguez, a 22-year-old Mexican citizen, was indicted in September 2024 and pleaded guilty the following month to illegal alien in possession of a firearm. His sentence was delivered by U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix.

The incident occurred on October 1, 2023, when law enforcement responded to reports of "shots fired" outside a home in San Angelo. Witnesses at the scene, who were attending a party, stated that Mr. Gamez-Rodriguez had discharged several rounds from a handgun into the air.

According to an incident report from the sheriff’s office, Mr. Gamez-Rodriguez was intoxicated and angry after having his keys taken away. He allegedly brandished his gun, pointed it at two musicians hired for the event, and later fired four to six shots into the air before leaving in his vehicle. Witnesses claimed he also told someone at the party that he "knows people" who could "shoot up" the house.

A search warrant executed at Mr. Gamez-Rodriguez's residence led to the recovery of a Taurus 9mm semi-automatic handgun and two magazines of ammunition. Officers found these items alongside an employment contract signed by Mr. Gamez-Rodriguez and his vehicle keys.

Further investigation included reviewing Mr. Gamez-Rodriguez's Facebook profile photo, which depicted him holding a black handgun.

An immigration records check confirmed that Mr. Gamez-Rodriguez is a Mexican citizen born in Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico. He had not been authorized to enter or remain in the United States and had previously been deported via Laredo.

Upon completion of his prison term, Mr. Gamez-Rodriguez will face deportation proceedings again.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigation’s Dallas Field Office and the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Haag prosecuted the case.
