A Wilmington man, Stephen Heck, 67, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Cynthia Amalfitano. The sentencing took place on January 31 by a New Castle County Superior Court Judge after Heck was convicted at trial in October 2024. The investigation followed the disappearance and death of Amalfitano, whose body was found in Pike Creek's Carousel Park.

Attorney General Kathy Jennings commented on the case: “This case remains a tragic reminder of the grave consequences of domestic violence. I am deeply grateful to our prosecutors and the New Castle County Police for their dedication to this case. Nothing can bring back the life that was stolen, but our hearts are with Cynthia Amalfitano’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

New Castle County Chief of Police Colonel James Leonard III also remarked: “Through the dedicated work and collaboration of our detectives, patrol officers, and prosecutors from the Delaware Attorney General’s Office, justice has been delivered for Cynthia Amalfitano’s family. The life sentence given to Stephen Heck reflects the severity of his actions and ensures he is held accountable for his crimes. This outcome shows our dedication to seeking justice and supporting victims of domestic violence. We stand with the Department of Justice in recognizing the harm caused by these tragedies and the importance of holding offenders responsible.”

Amalfitano was reported missing on September 25, 2023, after failing to report to work. Her body was later discovered by New Castle County police in Carousel Park's underbrush. An autopsy confirmed her death resulted from strangulation and blunt force trauma. Evidence collected during the investigation included cell phone data, DNA, and bloodstains found in Heck's vehicle which led to his arrest, indictment, and conviction.
