Initial certification training for parenting investigators and guardians ad litem is scheduled for June 3-5 in Bismarck. Details on registration will be provided soon.
Guardians ad litem act as advocates for a child's best interests in cases such as annulments, divorces, legal separations, or other actions affecting marriage when there are concerns about the future of minor children. These guardians must be licensed attorneys.
Parenting investigators are appointed by the court to resolve disputes over parenting time or parental rights and responsibilities. They collect information about the family to help judges make informed decisions regarding children. Qualifications for these roles can be found in N.D.R.Ct. 6.5: https://www.ndcourts.gov/legal-resources/rules/ndrct/8-6
