An Iowa hospital administrator, Matthew David Keirans, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for identity theft spanning over three decades. Keirans, aged 59 from Hartland, Wisconsin, pleaded guilty on April 1, 2024, to charges of false statements and aggravated identity theft.
The case revealed that Keirans had assumed the identity of a former colleague from Albuquerque in the late 1980s. He used this stolen identity to obtain various documents and secured employment as a high-level administrator at an Iowa City hospital in 2013. During his tenure, he accessed critical systems remotely from Wisconsin using falsified identification.
Keirans also acquired loans totaling over $250,000 under the victim's name and maintained deposits at a national bank. The victim discovered the fraud when attempting to close accounts at a Los Angeles bank branch. Unable to answer security questions due to the fraudulent use of his identity by Keirans, the victim was arrested after Keirans provided false documentation to law enforcement.
Keirans continued to report falsely against his victim during subsequent legal proceedings in California. The victim was held without bail and spent significant time incarcerated or hospitalized before being released upon pleading "no contest" in March 2021.
Detective Ian Mallory's investigation eventually exposed Keirans' scheme through DNA evidence proving the true identity of the victim. Confronted with this evidence in July 2023, Keirans confessed.
Chief Judge C.J. Williams described Keirans’ actions as “egregious,” noting how he manipulated the justice system for personal gain. United States Attorney Timothy T. Duax stated that Keirans lived off his victim’s identity while ensuring his incarceration through calculated deceit.
University of Iowa Police Chief Lucy Wiederholt commended Detective Mallory’s persistence in uncovering facts vital for resolving this case. FBI Special Agent Eugene Kowel highlighted their commitment alongside local law enforcement partners like University of Iowa Police Department.
